Comic: When Drones Go Wrong

We're just on the forefront of drone technology, but what does the future hold? A comedic warning to insurers considering drones in their evolving IT strategies.

After their insurance companies sent drones, Joe and Carla had a whole new problem on their hands.

Brian Moore is a cartoonist and illustrator. His first brush with the world of IT was a very part-time gig applying software patches on a TRS-80 Model III. The patches were about four lines long and arrived in the mail, typed on letterhead. He has since moved on to computers ... View Full Bio

Insurance of the insurance-drones themselves
Drones colliding is a very possible scenario. As I believe the collision aviodance is not built-in in the drones.

In these cases we'll have a third drone being sent by the drone insurance company to do the insurance assessment of the insurance drone.

Who does the drone insurance by the way? Any insurer yet?

Yeah, still can't wrap my head around the whole drone thing.  Seems like one big, unsafe liability nightmare to me...

Anti-collision systems can be installed on board if the manufacturer thinks it is necessary. Mostly if we divide sky area between drones then there wouldn't be any collision.

Safety features
I think future drones will need some baked in safety features that are nigh-on-impossible to disengage, otherwise there are going to be problems. Nobody wants a drone that runs out battery landing on their head, but it would seem pretty simple to install a protocol that means if a drone gets below a certain battery threshold, that it lowers itself to the ground.

As others have suggested, minimum safe distances from other drones would be a good plan too.

Wow! That's it?
Click the link to see a few more samples and you dump me at one lousy comic?  And then when I get on your page, I go to close the banner ad for InterOp and you STILL take me to a full-screen ad?

You're on notice, InfoWeek - you're REALLY starting to annoy me with this pushiness!

What Do Drones and Instagram have In Common ?
Drones.   I can't get excited about the development.  It looks to be yet another thing society won't be able to handle responsibly.

Sorta like Instagram.

Terrible. This is why I seriously have no confidence in the self-driven or autonomous vehicle movement. Honestly speaking, there is just too much hype about it and not enough credible evidence that we would be safe in any of these vehicles. Even worse when it comes to talking about liabilities like this scenario right here!
